"Bulletproof" Coffee

There's been a lot of news about fat - the good fats - and how they are a factor in a healthy diet and a necessity for brain health.  There have been numerous studies that show we all need to be eating more saturated fats, such as coconut oil and butter.  With the "modern-day" diet of grains replacing fat as a major calorie source, there is a negative impact on the brain.

So....what's all this talk about fat have to do with coffee?

Coffee is known to have amazing health properties - loaded with antioxidants and many disease-fighting properties.  With all the benefits aside, so many of us "need" coffee to start our day. What if you could kick the benefits of coffee up a notch by adding the beneficial fats?  Let me introduce you to Bulletproof® Coffee

Bulletproof® Coffee is the brain child of Dave Asprey, founder of the "Bulletproof Executive".  The orginal recipe is available on the Bulletproof Executive website, where you can order Bulletproof® products, including supplements that can be added to your coffee.  You will also find some other great health & lifestyle information.

Want to make your own "Bulletproof" coffee.  Here's a recipe that you can make with ingredients you most likely already have on hand.

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces hot brewed coffee (using your favorite brewing method)
  • 1 Tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee (build up to 2 Tbsp or more over several days)
  • 1 - 2 Tbsp coconut oil

Directions:

  • Put all the ingredients in a blender and mix until the butter and oil is blended into the liquid and the coffee is frothy.

If you are not too sure about the drink, give it a chance beyond your first attempt.  You can experiment with the amounts of butter and/or oil as well as other additions, such as:

  • Raw cacao
  • Cinnamon
  • Coconut Cream or milk

The concept behind this concoction is to start your day off with healthy fats to reduce hunger, provide sustained energy, promote brain function and add a hefty dose of nutrients to your daily coffee.  (On a side note, studies have shown that ingesting 1-2 T of coconut oil helps reduce sugar cravings.)  As you incorporate this into your diet, pay attention to your hunger, sugar cravings and other improvements throughout the day.

We want to hear from you.... What are your favorite additions to your Bulletproof coffee?  What benefits have you experienced?
