Sea to Stars Cycle Race ~ Results

Congratulations to the endurance cyclists that competed in the Sea to Stars cycling race.  42 of elite endurance cyclists from around the world gathered for the annual race, considered the hardest hill climb in the world.

This epic challenge is a distance of around 49 miles and climbing to 9,300 feet elevation to reach the top of Mauna Kea.  With a steepness grade of more than 17 percent, Sea to Stars is the toughest and most exciting endurance race in the world.  This years race started in humid and sunny 90 degree conditions, followed by heavy mist and a temperature drop to around 50 degrees as the cyclists approached Mauna Lea.

Eric Lau, 22, from Honolulu broke the finishing record in the race’s seven year history, completing the grueling race in a time of 3:23.20.  The fastest time previously recorded was 3:45, achieved by fellow Honolulu cyclist, Mike Zagorski in 2010.

Coming in second was Ray Brust, 50, also from Honolulu, with a time of 3:29.24.

Big Island triathlete, Rani Tanimoto, 35, made an impressive Sea to Stars debut taking out the women’s title with a time of 4:39.09.

ALOHA MAI KAKOU,
Well, as an observer to the race held last Saturday, August 13, was a spectacle for sure, especially seeing a young man that I have known since he was born, Eric Lau, demolishing the course record by over 20 minutes. Eric was actually born and raised in Hilo, and graduated fom the Hawai'i campus of Kamehameha Schools in Kea'au. Eric had just recently graduated from Stanford University in California, with an undergrduate in pre-med, and is currently working on the island of O'ahu. So O'ahu, try not to take too much credit for the cycling talent here in Hawai'i. Yes the Big Island, and namely Hilo, will continue to put out competitive athletes, even in the realm of competitive cyclists.
