2013 Kīholo Volunteer Day for National Trails Day

Kīholo Volunteer Day - National Trails Day

June 1, 2013  l  8:30 am  l  Waiaelepī side of Kīholo State Park

Join Hui Aloha Kīholo in commemorating National Trails Day on June 1, 2013 with a full day of trail-related activities. Gather at the Waiaelepī side of Kīholo State Park, near the Loretta Lynn House, at 8:30 am for registration and a briefing for the day's events. At 9:00 am the group will be divided into several work crews and begin to clear a path that connects the Kīholo-Hu`ehu`e Trail and to coastal Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. Work for a couple of hours and break for a potluck lunch at about 11:30 am. In the afternoon, there will be a hike with E Mau Nā Ala Hele  to Luahinewai and across the 1800 Ka`ūpūlehu lava flow toward Kalaemanō and its amazing tide pools and spectacular coastline.

Be prepared for light duty work in hot, dry conditions: sun protection (hat, sunscreen, protective clothing), drinking water for the work site (water will be available), work shoes (no slippers - kiawe country!) and work gloves.  Also be prepared for a fun hike: shoes for traversing a lava rock trail, walking stick and backpack. Optional: camera, binoculars, swimwear and towel.

If you are interested in joining in on National Trails Day, please email macabio@hawaii.edu with the number in your party and what you would like to share at the potluck.

If you cannot make it to Kīholo please try to go on a hike on a trail near you - even a short one - with family and friends.
