2013 Queen Lili'uokalani Race

Queen Lili'uokalani Race

August 31, 2013 - September 2, 2013  

Saturday: Wa'a Kaukahi (single hull canoes) 
The women start this event paddling 18 miles from Kailua Bay to Honaunau. The men then bring it back 18 miles to Kailua Bay. ceremony - right after finish of men's race. Torchlight parade party starting at dusk.

Saturday starting times:

  • 7:30 am - Iron women
  • 7:35 am - Unlimited women
  • 7:40 am - 9 women
  • 11:45 am - Iron men
  • 11:50 am - Unlimited men
  • 11:55 am - 9 men

Sunday: Wa'a Kaulua (double hull canoes) 
Women and the mixed double hulls take the Wa'a (canoes) 3 miles South to Lyman's, turn there and return to Kailua Bay for a total of six miles. 

Sunday: OC1 & OC2 Races 
A recent addition to the more traditional racing events. The men and women paddling in this one follow the same course as the double-hull canoes. All races start at Kailua Bay.

Sunday starting times:

  • 7:30 - Teen Girls/ Teen Boys: OC-6
  • 7:30 - Teen Girls OC 6
  • 8:30 - Kane Teen Boys OC 1&2
  • 9:00 - SUP Long Course
  • 9:10 - SUP Short Course
  • 9:30 - Wahine Doublehull
  • 10:45 - Kane Doublehull
  • 11:00 - Wahine/Mix OC 1&2
  • 12:00 - Mix Doublehull

Sunday: Stand-up Paddleboards  (Kailua Bay, Long Course 9am, Short Course 9:10am)
Course goes south to Casa de Emdeko, turn there and return to Kailua Bay. Stock total distance: 3.5 miles and Unlimited: 4.5 miles. This year Hulakai is helping sponsor the SUP event for the weekend, offering:

Rentals stock class boards
Race shirts for early online registration

Sunday: Teen (single hull) 
Three Keiki divisions (OC-6 - 6 person crews): 16 and under, 18 and under & mixed AND 18 and under. The course follows the same course as the double hull canoes. Luau & Awards to follow.

Monday: Ali'i Challenge (single hull canoes - 12 person crew) 
The paddling course will run north, the first turn will be at a buoy just outside the Honokohau Harbor. The course then doubles back and the second turn will be at a buoy approximately 1/2 mile south of the Kailua-Kona pier. The third turn will be right about where the finish line is for Saturday's men's race, for a short approach to a lane marked by buoys off the pier where the crew change for the 6 women and 6 men will take place. Special Events:


  • 3:30 pm - Award presentations for all Saturday races at Kamakahonu Bay, by the King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel.
  • 6:30 pm - Torchlight parade of paddlers from Hale Halawai Center to Kailua Pier.


  • 2:00 pm - Award presentations for all Sunday races at Old Kona Airport Events Pavilion. Luau for all paddlers, race officials, and their families. Paddlers' luau tickets are included with the entry fee. All others may purchase tickets at the Kai'Opua Registration Desk or at the luau door.
